Happy New Year Guys!
I hope you had a wonderful 2017 and wish you all the best in 2018!
For those of you new to this website, in this post, I discuss the recent changes I made in my dividend portfolios and also discuss about my portfolio diversification strategies.
Stocks markets keep setting new records day after days, especially U.S market runs high without taking break – correction.
Financial experts have been predicting a deep correction in U.S market for years, but it doesn’t seem happening. We are living in second big bull market in the history. Investors have been enjoying unbelievable gain for more than 9 years.
We don’t know what will happen in the future. Thus, it is not harm to take some profits off the table in U.S stocks. So, I decided to trim two positions and took some profits. I may miss some gains if those stocks keep flying high, but I didn’t want to take risk.
I will consider buy them back if their price drop more than 10% from my selling price.
I didn’t make any major changes in my Canadian dividend portfolio. I just added 2 more ZDH (BMO international dividend ETF) using some dividend received in my TFSA account.
I made a couple of my changes in my newly built small cap growth portfolio.
In December, my dividend portfolios didn’t do well as markets did due to the high percentage of defensive stocks. Defensive stocks usually take hit when investors get confident in market, as many move their money from slow moving stocks to high flying one.
But I don’t have any idea to change my strategy. Therefore, I will keep building my assets using dividend paying stocks as I did past few years.

You are overdiversified

Hello Oracle,
Thank you for stopping by,
I like to have a well diversified investments because I currently working in a 8-4 job, and hard to monitor my portfolio daily. Any bad news or situation in one particular shouldn’t de-trail my financial goal.

Any opinions on ENB, BEP.UN, or ENF as of Feb 1, 2018?
They seem to be down in price quite a bit. Would this be a good time to purchase with such high yields? Do you plan on adding any shares yourself?
Finance Jouneny says
Hello Grant,
Thank you for stopping by,
ENB is one my largest position in my portfolio. I already have 260 shares as of this writing, so I don’t have any plan to add more at this time, but I am very closely watching it.
BEP and other Canadian utilities stocks also down due to the rising bond yield. I may consider adding few stocks here and there.

Quick question..Are your yearly earning based solely on your u.s. portfolio or is it a combination of all your assests?
Finance Jouneny says
Hello Dominik,
Thank you for stopping by,
Yearly estimated earning based on my entire investment assets. In this case, I use as one USD equal to one CAD.

Hey FJ, I did some changes to my portfolio too. Took my 5,500$ for TFSA contributions, and threw it into BAM.A, CNR, BNS, and GIB.A (CGI Group). You know, the usual boring stocks. I still have enough to throw it into something else. I was thinking of diversifying into the International market, as I am only 60% into Canadian & 39% into US, 1% into Australia. I’m also thinking about picking up AQN, as it’s at a discount, but don’t want to overweight into Utility.
I don’t want to speak loudly, but I do believe we are going to continue in this bull market, I’m big on watching the Volatility Index (VIX), and it hasn’t been this low in ever. But it is reminiscent of January 1st, 2007, and we all know what happened from there.
Anyway, that’s just my two cents. Or nickel.

Hello Justin,
Thank you for stopping by and sharing your new purchases.
I like all your new purchases and own BAM.A, CNR, BNS (fairly larger positions in my portfolio). Glad to see we are partners 🙂 I also thinking add BAM.A and AQN after the recent pullback, but I am in same situation as you.
Bull market may continue for next few weeks/months, but I feel there will be a correction in 2018 (it is just my guess).
Best Regards
