Intro..
For those of you new to this website, in this post, I discuss the recent changes I made in my dividend portfolios, and sometimes I discuss my portfolio diversification strategies as well.
Another month passed by with strong market return.
Value of my investment assets continued to move higher in April and hit a new high. Therefore, it is time to be a little quiet and sharpening up my buying power by paying down my debts.
I follow Warren Buffet’s famous quote of “Be fearful when others are greedy and greedy when others are fearful.”
Actually, I purchased many stocks last December when the market was taking hard hit. To be honest, I did not catch the exact bottom, but I bought a few stocks much lower price than today’s value.
In fact, I borrowed some money to buy them, as I did not have enough cash reserve to deploy.
It was a risky move. Even I was a little nervous to do that. Nevertheless, I did it anyway.
Most of the purchases performed well for the last four months and helped to increase my net-worth.
Now, markets are near an all-time high. Thus, I should be a little quiet and paying down the debts so I can use them when opportunities arrive.
At the same time, I did not want to interrupt the compounding growth. Therefore, I keep reinvesting some dividends and purchasing some investments.
Compounding growth strategy is one of the best ways to build wealth for the long-term. It takes time but it will work for patient investors when you use it correctly.
There are so many great books about this compounding wealth building strategy. As a dividend investor, my favorite one is ‘Get Rich with Dividend – A proven system for earning double-digit returns‘ by Marc Lichtenfeld.
It is a U.S. book, but the concepts apply equally to Canadian stocks.
If you are a dividend investor, then it one of the best book you should read.
Now, let us look at the purchases I made last month.
Canadian portfolio
Last month, I purchased 10 shares TD bank stocks to bring my holding to 200 and bought 10 shares of Telus.
U.S portfolio
I did not make any changes in my U.S portfolio last month. A very quiet month.
International Portfolio
I added a few units of ZDH (Canadian hedged) international dividend ETFs to this portion.
Currently, I have around $10000 in my international portfolio, which is still less than 5% of my investment value. I will continue to build these positions to diversify my assets.
Here are the changes I made in my dividend portfolios in April 2019:

Commission FREE ETF purchases
Are you wondering how I can execute small orders of ETSs? Thinking about commission fees?
Actually, I use Questrade for all my ETFs purchases. There are no commission fees for ETFs purchases at Questrade. Therefore, we could buy one or any number of ETFs without paying any commission fees.
This is a great way to deploy cash and invest for more cash-flow as soon as they come in.

Thank you for sharing. I’ve been following your journey for a while. Your stock picks and buy at dip strategies are absolutely make sense to me.
I have a quick question. You’ve mentioned that you borrowed money to invest. Can you share how much are you paying for the debt related expenses (if you don’t mind)?

Hello Raj,
Thank you for stopping by,
When I borrow money I ensure my borrowing cost (interest rate + balance transfer fee) shouldn’t go above 3%. The only exception is my margin loan, which I pay around $3.25%; however, the loan I pay for my margin loan is tax detectable because I use it to buy income producing assets.
Hope this helps,
Best Regards,
