This is my second-last net-worth updates report for the year 2017. For those new to my finance journey, net worth update is a simple report I post every month which tracks the progress of my journey to reach my financial goals.
My ultimate financial goal is to become a self-made millionaire by December 2024 (10 year plan) by saving and investing in stable dividend paying blue-chip companies.
I am posting all my financial information in this website because I love to inspire and motivate people to start their own journey to reach their financial freedom.
You could learn from my successes and failures (experience) and improve your financial IQ.
Along the way, I make financial mistakes and will share my experience here with you. So, you could learn something, avoid those mistakes and save money.
Also, I like to publickly track my progress and get valuable advice from like-minded people.
In November 2017, my net worth increased by $5300 or 2.83% from my last month updates.
Last month I received three pay-checks from my day-job. For those, who receive bi-weekly salary know that we receive three pays twice a year. Therefore, my net-worth got little boost my day job salary :).
This is fairly very short post as I just wanted to spend my time with family and friends.
I wish you a wonderful and healthy holiday, and joyful new year π

Hello, I am curious as to why you have such a large number of holdings in your portfolio. Also, do you use dividend reinvestment plans (DRIP) with your holdings? It would seem to me that by reducing the number of holdings and employing DRIPs you could maximize your returns.
Finance Jouneny says
Hello Eggbert,
Thank you for stopping by,
I plan to hold around 100 to 125 holdings in my portfolio. I didn’t want to limit my portfolio with just 20 to 30 stocks because if we pick one bad stock, then it takes more time to recover. Also, I like to receive pure cash often than once or twice a month.
I also like DRIP, but I like to let pile up the cash in my accounts and buy a stock for attractive valuation…

Hi, cool website!
Was wondering what platform you are using to trade with, and how much you pay in fees?
I see some sales and purchases of minimal shares (5 shares here, 15 shares there etc…), and would assume you are paying fees for each trade?
for example this one:
SOLD 15 shares of BTL at $15.13
BTL was purchased at $12.21 and sold it at $15.13 with a decent profit
this is a $46 profit. does that include the trade commissions?
Or do you have a setup where u get free/cheap trades?
Im with TD, and I’m paying $10 per trade…
Finance Jouneny says
Hello Kokes,
My majority of my holdings are in my Questrade accounts, and I pay $4.95 per trade. I also have account in TD & RBC direct investing.
Currently, I am doing some experiments with Interactive Broker (IB) (commission fee $1 per trade). Therefore, the I actual profit with BTL trades is $44 ($46 – $2).
In Interactive Broker, you must make minimum 10 trade per month if you have less than $100 000 USD in your accounts. Otherwise, you must pay the fee trades missing trades (lets say you make only 3 trade for a month, then you must pay the fee for rest of the 7 trades). Therefore, you must pay the fee whether you make any trades or not in a month. So, I am executing small trades every month to avoid unnecessary fees.
Hope this makes sense!
Best Regards

Hello!
I recently made my very first trade in the stock market (yay!). I came across your website while doing research and I am very impressed!
Do you have posts about your beginnings and how you started learning? Any advice or suggestions on reading material would be greatly appreciated!!!
Finance Jouneny says
Hello Miss Lynne,
Thank you for stopping by,
Actually I don’t have any specific post about how I started learning. I just jumped in and started investing with very little knowledge. And, I learned from here and there along the way. Good lessons I learned from my mistakes.
I would recommend you to read good investment books written by very successful investors. I hope this helps,
Best you all the best in your success π

Finance Jouneny says
Hello TorontoGuy,
Thank you for your comments,
No, I really don’t understand about Crpyto-currencies’ concepts and I invest if and only if I understand the business. Re Marijuana stocks – no I haven’t yet made any investments..

Hello. I have stumbled across your site and although I don’t want to sound rude I must say, ….. you must be out of your mind ! One income household, a new baby and all of that borrowed money – debt. We are currently living in a grand central bank experiment to attempt to keep this dyeing financial system functioning and although I understand the mathematics associated with what you are trying to accomplish I’m not sure this is the right time to implement it. 25-30 trillion $ of debt has been pumped into this system and now everyone is all giddy about the stock market. There will be another financial crisis. It’s just a matter of time. Be careful.
Finance Jouneny says
Hi Cautius One,
Thank you for your feedback and advice π
My majority of holdings are well run companies, and have already gone through the worst financial cries in modern history. I really hope they will survive if there is another one.
I didn’t buy luxuries toys or other sort of items using my debts. OR I didn’t buy high flying BitCoins or hot tech stocks with high P/E ratio. OR I didn’t buy a million dollar home in hot housing markets. I am buying diversified income generating assets in multiple sectors. I hope I can handle any sort term surprises π
Cheers,

A great thank you for publishing your net worth details…..On the promotional Credit Cards, the rates expire on most very soon……..would it not be better to request Bank to amalgamate all the capacity into the existing HELOC….the rates are low and they do not expire until mortgage is paid up….
Finance Jouneny says
Hello Prasanna,
Thank you for stopping by,
I already have HELOC account at RBC with available credit over $20 000. I hope I can easily rotate the balance if needed π
