I started to track my expenses after realized about my unnecessary spending habits. Two weeks ago, I tracked my fixed expenses and looked for all possible ways to save money.
First, I called Bell Canada to negotiate the land phone line price, but I ended up without any success. I was paying $22.26 with tax for a basic line and caller display – it doesn’t have any other features. Phone line is important for us because we (specially my wife) daily talk with families and friends, and it is not possible with our cell phones.
So, I looked for alternatives and came up with few voice-over IP options. There are so many devices available, but I looked for something reliable for long-term and found Talkit adapter.
I really started to like Talkit after read so many positive reviews on Google. I heard about majic Jack, but wasn’t impress because of mixed review.
Thus, I ordered the Talkit adapter on their website and received the package yesterday. It cost $139.98 plus tax with first year service
The setup was supper easy – activate the device online, simply hook up with an internet cable and connect the line with a phone. It works really well. And, it has much more features including free Canada wide call. We didn’t even need a special phone, I used my old phone. Oh yes!!!
What did I do next? Today, I called my service provider from the Talkit phone and cancelled the land line. I was told that I have to wait for 30 days to cancel – according to their policy :(. It was fine for me because from next month I can save $15 per month in my fixed expensive.
Then, I called Rogers and negotiated with them to reduce my other bills, and after about 40 minutes negotiation they agreed to reduce my bills by $15 per month for one year, but still I wasn’t not satisfied.
I started to search for alternatives and found a device called ‘Google TV’. I ordered it on Amazon, but haven’t received it yet. Once I received the package, I will use it myself and discuss here. If it works well, then I can save another $40 per month from the cable connection :D.
Later update: Read here my two years experience of Google TV
Let’s wait and see.

Thank you Rice for your comments,
Actually I am using Google TV now, but didn’t have a chance to post about it. Having really hard time to sit and write a blog post as I have a 9 months baby to take care along with full time job 🙂 .
I will try my best to post about it in coming weeks.
Thank you for your interest,
Best Regards,

I got rid of my land line about 9 months ago and replaced it with Ooma. It should work in Canada too. I wrote about not long ago “I Saved $372 On My Home Phone” Here is the link:

Surely, I will wait for your review about the Google TV. I already cut off my land line 5 years ago and I only use my mobile phone ever since.

Thank you Clarisse,
I know many people cut off their land lines, but we need it for long distance talks. I am so glad that I found talkit. It works really well.
Cheers,

Good call on cutting the cord. I havent had a land line in 10 years and never looked back. I still pay Bell $10 every month for a dry loop for my internet connection though 🙁 Hate it as a consumer, but love it as an investor that BCE can charge money like this and get away with it.
Do you have the link for the Google TV? I recently ordered Amazon Fire TV and had to return it since it doesnt work in Canada. The Netflix app doest work, Prime doesnt work….completely useless. Loved the specs though. I was thinking of buying Apple TV, but wondering if Google TV is any good.

Thank you R2R,
I like Canadian big three telecoms as investor, but hate as customer as well.
If you want I can give you the link, but I am not sure about it as I haven’t received it yet.
